Unlike baler twines, Netwrap cannot be used on every type of bale: they are only suitable for round bales. So why do some farmers use baler twines and others Netwrap? Is one better than the other? Well, like with everything, it depends.
Compared to baler twines, the process of wrapping the bale is substantially shorter when using Netwrap. This can be very valuable to many farmers because it enhances productivity and saves time, hence costs.
Netwrap is efficient in protecting bales that are stored outside because the net almost covers the full surface of the round bale. Hence, net-wrapped bales are less sensitive to bad weather conditions such as rain and snow. However, in parts of the world where farms see a lot of snow and frost, the Netwrap can freeze and as a consequence it is tricky to extract it from the bale.
For farmers not experiencing these weather conditions, removing the net is usually simple and effortless: one can either cut the Netwrap loose with a knife or simply unwrap it. It is very important to fully remove the Netwrap from the bale otherwise it can end up in the livestock’s digestion which can be extremely harmful. Because the net wraps the bale so tight, it maintains its shape fairly well and there is a reduction in storage and handling losses.
When comparing prices, Netwrap is substantially more expensive. However, a lot of farmers argue that due to its quality and nature, it is worth the investment.
In conclusion, there is no definite answer to whether Netwrap is better than baler twine or vice versa. It really depends on what kind of farmer you are and what kind of equipment and infrastructure one possesses.
